BUST THE BITS AND PIECES PARTY 2023

AUGUST 3, 2023

Is your stash starting to expand and invading other areas than your sewing studio? Are your muffin bins topped and about to explode at any minute? Do you feel overwhelmed? Not sure how to use it or what to do with it, and almost to the point of giving it away? I feel that way too, at times!  Not to worry! I believe I have a cure for this common ailment. Let’s bust our scraps, especially those little pieces that seem to multiply when your back is turned.

Each Thursday I will find some patterns that will deal with the little pieces and even some of the larger and odd pieces that we all tend to accumulate.

Summer seems to be the month to be sewing baby quilts, and here are some quick, easy, and easy to sew baby quilts!

First, we have the Sewing Room Channel, an Easy Baby Quilt.

AUGUST CHALLENGE, JUST FINISH IT!

I set a goal of finishing and/or flimsifying 12 projects by the end of August.  There might be a few more than that and that doesn’t include kits.  I watched Karen Brown’s video on When To Quilt, Which Projects Are Worth Finishing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7rCCyzZQ58&t=921s) and I have already sandwiched one quilt, another one almost ready, and decided that there are 2 projects that I just do not love or want to do.  Those will be given to the guild for donation.  I decided that I am tired of looking at the totes full of UFOs and I want them done and donated and/or gifted!!

If I want to reach this goal, I need to get started.   I was out for most of the morning and I feel very motivated to get moving.  I already have one ready for the quilter, another one that is close to that stage and a little more quilting on a table runner.

Who wants to join me in this challenge?  Any takers?

Each Thursday I will find some patterns that will deal with the little pieces and even some of the larger and odd pieces that we all tend to accumulate.

Today, we have a mix of different ideas.  We are starting with a fun layer cake pattern from Missouri Star Quilts.  So, get your rotary cutter, a layer cake and a jelly roll and prepare for some fun!

Come on, I know we all have UFOs, and I for one, have a lot of them. If you’re not sure, then ask yourself these questions. It’s okay, I can wait.

Is your UFO stack taller than you?

Have you lost track of how many? I have so many I can’t count that high.

Do you have UFOs hiding in closets, whispering your name?

Do you have a problem child or two? You know what I mean, those that just don’t want to play well with others.

Would you like to have some dedicated time to just finish these and mark them off your list once and for all?

Then, please join us for

End of Summer Challenge August 1 to 15, 2023

This is a virtual retreat, so no packing is involved, no money and no obligation.

Why so long? A week is just not long enough, at least for me, to get much sewing done. I am a slow seamstress, plus I get distracted by Squirrels very easily. You can drop in or out whenever you want. Just a little extra time to finish your projects.

We will have a messenger chat room available where you can visit, ask questions, and show off your work. We have a lot of quilters and if you have any questions, I’m sure there is someone who can answer your questions.

So what do you need to do? Everything will be done on messenger chat, nice and private, and easy to access. When we get to messenger, you can post a list of the problem children that you want to work on and list the stage that it is at, like blocks cut out, sashing, borders, etc.

And all you have to do is sew to your heart’s content, share your progress and enjoy yourself. Hope to see you there!

Oh, and don’t keep it a secret!

Today, we are going to look at quick and easy baby quilts.

Our first one is from Karen Brown of Just Get It Done. She has a free quilt pattern at the end of it and it makes the quilt look a little more modern but still cuddly enough for a baby.

Our second one shows how to make a unique applique baby quilt and is from The Sewing Channel.

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccoGb2DL72s

Flings galore and stash report

And I didn’t bring home anything extra with me.  Guild meeting was last night, I flung a bunch of string blocks, crazy blocks and a donation quilt last night.  And I didn’t buy any tickets for fabric or books.  Nor did I even glance once at the goodies on the free table!  WOOHOO!

Last week after visiting Vac and Sew and buying yet another kit, yes I’m addicted to kits, I decided then and there NO MORE BUYING or bringing home fabric.  And I haven’t.  Saturday, tomorrow, will be one week since I made this decision and I intend to keep it.  And, no I do not have my fingers crossed behind my back.

I have now released from 3 bins, the fabric that was sitting there.  One I used up what was in the box and the others were given away.  Oh what a good feeling that is.  And yet, I still have stacks of projects to work on but that is okay.  Those are ones that I really want to do.  It has taken about 3-4 months since my surgery where I have really wanted to sew and I am!! V

A very happy Donna in California!

What I have been working on

while I was at Kiki’s the past 2 days.  The first one is a set of 12 blocks from my Secret Sister back in 2014.  It is now a top and ready to be sandwiched for the quilter.  I have gotten tired of traditional same color borders and wanted it to be bright and friendly and so I went with this.  This will go to the Marjoree Mason Center.

The second one I just really wanted to share.  This is a round robin that we are doing and this is the second round that I added.  It will now go to the next person to add onto it.

I still have a few more to finish and will post later today.
