BUST THE BITS AND PIECES PARTY 2024

DECEMBER 5, 2024

Is your stash starting to expand and invading other areas than your sewing studio? Scary, isn’t it!

Are your muffin bins topped and about to explode at any minute?

Do you feel overwhelmed? Not sure how to use it or what to do with it, and almost to the point of giving it away? I feel that way too, at times!  Not to worry! I believe I have a cure for this common ailment. Let’s bust our scraps, especially those little pieces that seem to multiply when your back is turned.

Each Thursday I will find some patterns that will deal with the little pieces and even some of the larger and odd pieces that we all tend to accumulate. Here are some fun and easy stocking stuffer ideas and maybe a quilt pattern too!

Our first one comes from See Kate Sew and she has 18 Genius Quilt Ideas. As you can see, I have been binge watching her videos!

KINDA SPOOKY

Where, oh, where did my white scraps go?

As for scraps breeding in the dark, that is  true.  But where did my scrappy whites that I set aside for the quilt I am working on disappear?  I spent half an hour looking for them and it was almost a half yard leftover from 3 yards of fabric meant to be used for the borders.  Disappearing fabric, kinda spooky!  Good thing I have more white fabric, not the same pattern, but very close to it that I can  use, but I hate it when things go missing.  I will probably find it in a couple of years when I no longer need it.

Otherwise my scraps are very healthy and breeding like crazy.  I do use a lot of scraps but I do like to have yardage available.  I have my scraps organized by size, color, and type (novelty, seasonal, etc) and I also have a large basket that is starting to overflow from projects that I am working on currently.  Once this quilt is finished, going to the quilter tomorrow, I can sit back, breath a sigh of relief and start sorting again.

Update: I did find my white scraps! They were folded inside some yardage. Oh, and look at what else I found in projects bag!

TURNAROUND

Welcome to Scrappy Quilters’ 2025 Quilt Along!

PLEASE READ:

ATTENTION: Due to an ongoing illness that I am having a hard time recovering from, this quilt will be on hold until further notice. Thank you for understanding. My apologies.

Why is it called Turnaround? We are going to make some fun blocks but we are going to turn them on their ear, so to speak. Think about when you see a simple block, such as King’s Crown. It is basically a set of the same 4 pieces to make the Flying Geese blocks put together. But what if we take those Flying Geese and NOT make the King’ s Crown, and instead turn the geese upside down.

Watch this video to see how to put together the King’s Crown:

Now using the flying geese as a separate block, see what happens:

You have a totally different block to work with. These will be the cornerstones of our quiltalong!

We are going to take apart some of the more common blocks as we go along and create something different. I hope you will join us as we explore and experiment with more ideas with blocks. Kickoff date is January 15, 2025 and fabric requirements will be available then along with the first and second blocks and their directions.

Just to let everyone know, there is no registration required for the sewalong. All patterns are free from FB and youtube.com and can be found there. All I ask is that you drop a comment now and then and let me know what you think or if you have any ideas to share.

Thank you!

MERRY CHRISTMAS and an early gift to pique your interest further, here is a picture of the quilt:

The blocks can be done in either 12 or 9 inches and directions will be posted on January 15, 2025. We should have the top together by March 14, 2025 as it goes together fairly quickly!

See you soon.

January 15, 2025

Good morning everyone!

As promised here is a list of fabric requirements. This quilt will measure 38 x 38 square when put together. You can then add a border around it if you wish.

Here are my fabric choices. Yes, they are different from the EQ8 coloring, and even though I do like those colors of red, green, yellow and white background, what I had in my stash didn’t really make those colors POP for me. I decided to go with some fun colors instead. I am using some grunge fabric with a fun fish fabric that goes together so nicely.

These are my primary colors that I want to use for the blocks. But notice that there are ladder blocks and I thought that using some different bright colors would make those little square in the ladder pop, and also with the center block, Mosaic, the little diamonds will also pop!

Primary Grunge fabrics with the fish fabric as a focus.

And here are the fabric requirements:

I still need to cut my fabric and this weekend I will post my blocks.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

The first block is called King’s Crown. Now if you look closely it is the upside version of the flying geese with a ladder attached. It may look a little complicated at first, but when it is broken down into smaller parts, it goes together fairly easily. You will need to make 4 of these. Here are the instructions and once I have mine put together I will post step-by-step directions to help if you need it.

I realized that I had uploaded the 5 inch version of the blocks. My apologies, they should be 12.5 inches unfinished. There are 2 pages, so please make sure to download both. I have been down with a head cold for the past few days and have it partially cut out. Thank you for your patience.

My apologies to everyone waiting for the blocks. I have been down with a terrible cold and have not been up to sewing for the past week or so. Thank you for understanding.

Catching Up

I have been busy attending an embroidery trunk show at AVS on Tuesday and then a DIME presentation this morning on zoom, both focusing on embroidery designs, patterns and classes.  I may be a little poorer as I bought the software download for my machine, but I believe it will improve my edge-to-edge quilting skills.  I don’t usually buy big ticket items but I think it is worthwhile and helpful.  I also get 4 free tutorials on how to use it, so that will be good.

Last night I finished all 63 blocks for Grandma’s Victory Quilt and now have to finish squaring them up and get them laid out.  I don’t think it will take too long and hopefully I can get it to the quilter next week.  The past 2 weeks have been hectic with being hacked on FB, but not my email, and that was recovered, with going through and cleaning up and changing passwords.  Now that that is behind me I can start focusing on the important stuff, quilting!!   Having coffee with a friend tomorrow and then a vet appt for little Miss Purrl (our kitten) and then on Sunday, my sister will be coming to Fresno for a very short visit.  I think that is enough for one week!  I will decide what to work on once I get the quilt laid out, that’s foremost on my mind right now.

Gotta run and will chat later!
