MINI BLOCK CLUB 2019 PART 2, FEBRUARY

NOTE:  I started a new post as the other was too long, so from here on out I will be making a new post each month.  This means that if you’re new to the group that you will have to go back a little to find the previous posts.

BORDER BLOCKS:  SURPRISE! BOW TIE 3.5 INCHES**

This is a very easy block that is so fun to make.  You will need to make 4 of these fast little blocks.  Each block will go at the corners of the outside border.  Instead of writing the directions out here, I am providing a link.  Make sure that you scroll to 3-inch Finished Blocks.

Link to Spruce Crafts:  https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/easy-bow-tie-quilt-block-pattern-2821130

I will post pictures of my blocks later today!  Have fun!

NOTE:  Remember, there will be a few 3.5 inch blocks scattered in there and that is just a guide to show where we are in the quilt. The picture may not be the way the quilt top turns out. We shall see. Some may go in the sashing or in the borders. As we go along, I will give you clues as to where they will go.

There will be two outer borders.  The inner border is 2 inches and the outer border is 3 inches.  These are shown as the Inner Border having blocks at the corners and the Outer Border is shown as blocks going all around.  PLEASE REMEMBER that this is subject to change and is just to show the size and design (for now) of the entire quilt top.  PLEASE NOTE:   We are going to just go with the first four (4) blocks  each month.   Also, if I posted all the fabric requirements it would be too overwhelming and confusing to follow as they are not in order of the blocks.

My color palette includes a lot of colors, but I prefer mainly solid or small prints.  This is just an estimate of what you will need, about 1/8th of a yard for the blocks.  Unless otherwise specified, the blocks will require 1/8th of a yard and I will let you know if  there are larger or smaller pieces that you can use instead.  There are 48 blocks and since  these are small this is also a good way to use up a lot of scraps.  You can choose to go with yardage, scraps, FQ or a combination.  I will probably be using scraps mostly as I have a lot.  But you can choose to go with a certain colorway if you like.  Please post your pictures in the comment section.  I would love to see how you’re doing and I love eye candy!

There will also be 3.5 inch blocks scattered throughout, so when you go to make your blocks, there will be a BOLD ** next to it.  For the first 4 blocks, they are all 6.5 inches but I am not telling you which block it is until the 10th, so make sure to stay tuned in!

FEBRUARY 10, 2019

Good Morning Everyone!

Just a note to let you know that as we speak I am working on February’s blocks and they will be posted later this morning. It takes a little time to photograph the steps, and write the details, so please bear with me.

There are a couple of changes to the blocks and I will be updating the pictures also. Whenever possible, I will provide links for the blocks if I feel it is an easier way to make it. The border blocks will be posted later this week.

Please stay tuned!

BLOCK #1:  Bow Tie 6.5 inches
This is a very easy block that is so fun to make.  Yes, I know that we did it as a border block. I am providing the same link but make sure that you scroll to 6-inch Finished Blocks.
I will post pictures later this morning.
I am still working on block and 3 instructions but will be posting them later today.
BLOCK :  Free Block:  I have tried for the better  part of this past week to get it to go together correctly and I give up!   Yes, EQ8 is great but doesn’t print out the instructions to go along with the measurements and that is frustrating.  I have been searching the internet for a similar block but could not find anything, so as an alternative to others like me who do not like Y-seams or are pattern impaired (I’m guilty of this at times) I offer Block be a free block of your own choice.   Once I have chosen one for myself, I will post a picture here.  Have fun!
The block I chose is called Odds and Ends.
If you want to make this block you can find it here at:  http://quilterscache.com/O/OddsandEndsBlock.html.  It is a 12 inch block but is easy to size it down to a 6 inch square.
BLOCK :  Monkey Wrench:  This is a very easy block to make, but for a 6.5 inch block, you will need the correct math for it.
The measurements are for the center;
1.2 inch square for the background and color.  Sew together as a 4 square block.
Then going around the block, remembering that the block is set on point, the triangles will be 2.5 inches for the first round, then 3 inches for the next round and 4 inches for the final round.  I tend to make the triangles a little larger just in case, and they can be trimmed down to size as needed.  Please, if my math is off, let me know.  I spent most of the afternoon trying to figure it out and lost some valuable sewing time because of that!
Here is the link for the Monkey Wrench block.  You can find it at:  http://quilterscache.com/M/MonkeyWrenchBlock.html.
I did work on mine this evening but it turned out a little wonky and I ran out of the scrap fabric that I was using, so I will try, try again in the morning.  Here is my Monkey Wrench.  Again, had to use a different fabric for the outside border but it works!
BLOCK #4:  Entwined Star:
This block looks complicated but if you look closely at it, it’s actually repeats of a Square-in-a-Square.  You do have to be careful with the color placement, though.  I will be posting a picture of mine later today, but for those who cannot wait, here is a link to the pattern.  It’s easier for me to make than to write the pattern out, gets a little complicated.  Make sure to click on the pattern in the center of the page, it opens up and gives you 3 (three) sizes to choose from, you will want the 6 inch size.
I found that some people are having trouble with the link above, so I am attaching the pattern as a pdf.
https://www.facebook.com/download/2146696628720886/entwined-star-quilt-block.pdf?hash=AcoRJeNoufdfsWZe  Just copy and paste it and it will come up where you can print it.  Make sure it’s the 6 inch size.
Since I had so much trouble with the second block and had not been feeling well for the past few days, I have not made this block yet.  Hope to get it taken care of today after I have a nap!
BORDER BLOCKS :  ITTY BITTY HOUSE

BORDER BLOCK ITTY BITTY HOUSES

This is a 3.5 inch block that is so simple, sweet and fun to make. You can download the pattern under files, Border Block or you can go here to download it: https://www.quiltingcompany.com/the-bitty-blocks-of-2015-f…/

It is the second block down. You will need to make 4 of these. I will be posting pictures this weekend.

Have fun creating!

Have fun!

Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Donna. My hubby and I are retired. We have twin daughters and are blessed with 4 grandchildren. We are owned by a cat, Purrl. who loves to supervise and is very nosy. I have been quilting since 1996. In addition to making quilts for my family and friends, I also make charity quilts for Marjoree Mason Center and Valley Children's Hospital. Marjoree Mason Center is a local organization here that helps and supports battered and abused women and children get out of abusive relationships. Every Christmas I make several baby quilts for the women, with a small stuffed animal or toy. I also belong to the San Joaquin Valley Quilters' Guild here in Fresno. Since I retired, I have been trying to finish most of my UFOs, but my stash is way out of control! I have lately gotten into designing quilts and enjoy that even more than sewing them! I love colors of all types and consider myself to be a true scrappy quilter and I do love playing with designs. I am the owner/moderator of Scrappy Quilters on Facebook, where we are very active with many mystery quilts, challenges and swaps. I welcome you to come by and check us out at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ScrappyQuilters. Thank you for dropping by and I hope to see you again soon.
