DONNA’S DOUBLE DARE CHALLENGE 2020 PART 3

MT. FUJI

Welcome back!  We are now starting on our applique and embroidery blocks.

Our first block is a simple applique pattern called Mt. Fuji.  Even though it appears simple, with the right combination of colors it can be dramatic.  You will only need to make one and this will go in one of the blank patterns.  There is no real pattern for this, this is my own idea that was adapted from a picture.

Here are the colors I chose:

You will also note that I added a border around the block so it appears as though it is framed.  I chose a solid dark and a lighter blue with a brown print with cherry blossoms.  The frame is a simple border that is brown with a small print.  You can choose a different color if you wish.

This was very easy to make.  You will need 4 pieces of fabric.

Dark Blue:  One 6.5 inch x 12.5 inch long strip

Light Blue:  One 6.5 inch x 12.5 inch long strip.

Floral Background:  One 6.5 inch x 12.5 inch long strip.

Frame:  Four 1.5 inch strips, two 12.5 and two 13.5 inches.

From the dark blue, fold it in half and cut into a triangle.  Please don’t worry too much about the size, after all it’s supposed to resemble a mountain and it doesn’t have to be perfect.  Now, take the floral and sew it to the light blue.  Press to the dark.  This should give you 12.5 inches all around.  Using a matching thread for the mountain, a dark blue, place your triangle (mountain) and sew it on.  I used a 2.5 inch zig-zag stitch all around it including sewing it to the bottom.   And there is your Mt. Fuji.

You will need to trim the block down a bit and then you can sew the frame all around it.  Pictures had been taken all throughout sewing but  my camera managed to lose them as I was downloading them.

BLOCK #4:  KIMONO

This pattern is very easy and can be done with just one focus piece or many smaller pieces inside, such as with smaller blocks within it or you can do small strips of fabric.  I will leave it to your imagination.  There is no wrong way to make it.  You can go to https://www.pinterest.com/pin/225109681348741216/?lp=true for more ideas.

This is a  basic 12-inch pattern that is pieced but I would make it a little smaller so that a frame can be put around it.  You will need a background and a focus piece. This is a good time to look through your stash and choose something bright and cheery.

From the background, cut the following:

  1.  Two 5.5 x 3.5 inch  strips.  Place right sides together and cut in half diagonally.
  2. Two 5 1/4  x 2 7/8 inch strips.  Place right sides together and cut in half diagonally.
  3. Two 2 7/8 x 3 1/4 inch strips.  Place right sides together and cut in half diagonally.
  4. Two 4 5/8 x 1 inch strips

From your focus, cut the following:

  1. Two 9  x 2 1/4 inch strips.
  2. Two 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 inch strips.
  3. One 2 1/4 inch x 1 inch strip.
  4. Two 5 1/2 x 3 1/4 inch strips.

Construction:

Using the diagram as a guide, sew the block.  Make the side skirts first, taking care not to stretch the bias edges,  Assemble the block in strips.  Regardless if you sue small blocks or strips within the block, it will still go together this way.

I am unable at this time to post a diagram but will post pictures of when the block is finished.

Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Donna. My hubby and I are retired. We have twin daughters and are blessed with 4 grandchildren. We are owned by a cat, Purrl. who loves to supervise and is very nosy. I have been quilting since 1996. In addition to making quilts for my family and friends, I also make charity quilts for Marjoree Mason Center and Valley Children's Hospital. Marjoree Mason Center is a local organization here that helps and supports battered and abused women and children get out of abusive relationships. Every Christmas I make several baby quilts for the women, with a small stuffed animal or toy. I also belong to the San Joaquin Valley Quilters' Guild here in Fresno. Since I retired, I have been trying to finish most of my UFOs, but my stash is way out of control! I have lately gotten into designing quilts and enjoy that even more than sewing them! I love colors of all types and consider myself to be a true scrappy quilter and I do love playing with designs. I am the owner/moderator of Scrappy Quilters on Facebook, where we are very active with many mystery quilts, challenges and swaps. I welcome you to come by and check us out at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ScrappyQuilters. Thank you for dropping by and I hope to see you again soon.
